A Real, Live Fairy Tale...

April 27, 2011

I am obsessed with the British royal family, so this week has been a week I have been looking forward to for a very long time. All I have to say is, "Geez, Prince William, it sure took you long enough!" Back in November when Prince William and Kate Middleton (finally) announced their engagement, I was positively thrilled. Look at him! Look at her! Look at that RING! I’ve been watching all the specials on television about the royal family, reading up on their family history (again), and counting down to the big day—Friday, April 29, 2011. Kate Middleton is living a real, live fairy tale.

My royal obsession started about the time I became a teenager and noticed that Prince William was rather a handsome sort of fellow.  AND, he was a real live Prince! I dreamed of the day I would get to travel to London. Of course, that dream also included bumping into Prince William at some royal place I was touring. We would fall madly in love, and he would make me his princess…Alas, it was not to be.

I got my first opportunity to travel to London in college with one of my English classes. It was a fantastic trip, but I didn’t get to see Prince William. I retook the class two years later just to go to London again. The second time was even better, but still no Prince William sightings. I developed a deep love for the city, and I can’t wait to go again someday.

With all the royal wedding talk, of course Princess Diana has been a topic of interest. Every time they bring her up, I get weepy. Even though I was only ten at the time, I remember watching the news coverage of her accident and death in Paris, and watching her funeral on television. Last week, I went to the Princess Diana exhibit at Union Station. I would recommend this exhibit to anyone who admired and loved Diana. Even better, they have her wedding dress there! It’s a perfect way to prepare for the upcoming royal wedding of her son.

MCPL has lots of books and movies for royal fanatics such as myself. Here are a few to choose from:

William and Kate: A Royal Love Story by Christopher P. Andersen
Royal Romance, Modern Marriage: The Love Story of William & Kate by Mary Boone
Philip and Elizabeth: Portrait of a Royal Marriage by Gyles Brandreth
Diana: Story of a Princess by Tim Clayton

The Windsors: A Royal Family (DVD)
William and Kate (PBS video)
The Queen (DVD)
