Read, Talk, Snack -- Kid Edition
December 09, 2010
Blue Ridge hosts a children’s book club each month during the school year, for fourth through sixth graders. It’s a lot of fun, and we’d love to have more participants. Since September, we’ve read Fight for Life by Laurie Halse Anderson, and The Underneath by Kathi Appelt. And since the book club started, we’ve read classic titles or award winners, such as Dear Mr. Henshaw by Beverly Cleary, and A Single Shard by Linda Sue Park.
We recently read the 2010 Newbery Winner, When you Reach Me by Rebecca Stead. This has been my favorite book since our fall sessions began. The story involves the good and bad that can happen between classmates who are friends, and those who are not. And there’s the little matter of time travel—the main character expects something out-of-this world to happen, but neither she nor the reader knows when it will. When You Reach Me would be great to read over the upcoming holiday break.
On Saturday, December 11, we’ll discuss The Mostly True Adventures of Homer P. Figg by W.R. Philbrick.
If you’re in fourth, fifth, or sixth grade (or between 9 and 12 years old), please feel free to join us. If you’re not in that age range, please feel free to bring someone who is! You can pick up a copy of the book at the Blue Ridge Branch or the whichever Mid-Continent Public Library branch you visit most often. Finally, if you don’t get the chance to read the book, come anyway! (We do snack a little—it adds a little crunch to the conversation.) We’ll give you the next book, The Maze of Bones by Rick Riordan. It’s Book One of The 39 Clues series. We’ll discuss it on January 8, 2011.
If you’d like to come, please call Blue Ridge at 761-3382, and register for the December 12 session.
Thanks for reading,
Geri H.
