Read to Combat Monsters
June 25, 2010
Do you or anyone you know fear monsters? My daughter did. She would say to me, “I scared monsters!” and shake her little fists to show how frightened she was. Now that we’ve read, Go Away, Big Green Monster! by Ed Emberley, when she feels scared of monsters, she smiles and shouts “Go away!”
I love that this book has empowered her. Moreover, I like that it teaches kids colors, shapes, and body parts. The text is simple and has repeating parts so that kids can say it along with their grown-ups. We have read it many times. I think it is one of her favorites.
Other good books for kids who are scared of monsters include The Monster at the End of this Book by Jon Stone/iIllustrated by Michael Smolin (one of my childhood favorites), Leonardo the Terrible Monster by Mo Willems, and Go to Bed Monster! by Natasha Wing/illustrated by Sylvie Kantorovitz.
Enjoy these books! Dash those fears! Have sweet dreams.

Book suggestion
My coworker suggested a similar book to share with my daughter. The book is Granny's Dragon by Lisa McCourt and features colorful illustrations by Cyd Moore. My daughter enjoyed it, and I did, too. What a creative presentation of both a positive use of imagination and a grandparent/ grandchild relationship!
