Rats, Lizards, and Spiders....Oh My!

September 07, 2010

I have always been an "animal person". Most library people are, hence, books like Dewey: The Small Town Library Cat Who Touched the World. When I was growing up, we had always at least 2 animals running around the house. However, when I got to college most apartments wouldn’t allow cats or dogs. So, I went and got the next best thing…a rat. The great thing about "animal people" is that they love all animals, great and small, familiar and unfamiliar. Luna was my hairless rat. She was clever, friendly, and she loved French fries. After a few months, Luna needed a buddy - that’s when Stella joined the family. For three years, Luna and Stella palled around with me, even earning the term “grandrats” from my mom.  Much like spiders, various lizards, and snakes, the rats were not always well received by guests. However, after people got to know them, they saw their extreme intelligence and sociability. All animals (including humans) should be admired and appreciated for their distinctness. Today I have cats, but I will always remember my little rats.
