Pucker Up!

February 07, 2011

"Kiss me my fool!" cried the slinky vamp as she plied her victim with passionate kisses. Falling under her spell, the man returned her kisses, entangled in her web of deceit. Actress Theda Bara in the 1915 film, A Fool There Was, lured a married man away from his wife and child with some of the first kisses ever recorded on screen. Since that movie, Hollywood has captured on film just about every kind of kiss imaginable.
In honor of Valentine’s Day, I have assembled my subjective list of favorite eclectic, on-screen kisses. Not all of my choices are chick flicks, so take a look! All movies are available free from MCPL. Spice up your Valentine’s Day, and maybe learn some new pointers about smooching while watching the following flicks:
Best Kiss in the Rain: The Notebook (2004). Rain + star-crossed lovers + pent up emotion = passion! Runner-up: Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961). How classy can you get? They’re both wearing trench coats!

Best Kiss of Death: The Godfather, Part II (1974). Michael Corleone, (Al Pacino) forcefully grabs his traitorous brother Fredo, (John Cavale), on both sides of the face and kisses him – Sicilian style. Michael: "I know it was you, Fredo. You broke my heart. You broke my heart!"

Best Dialogue During a Kiss: To Have and Have Not (1944). Slim (Lauren Bacall): "You're just a stinker". [Slim kisses Steve]. Steve (Humphrey Bogart): “What did you do that for”? Slim: "I've been wondering if I'd like it". Steve: "What's the decision"? Slim: "I don't know yet". [They kiss again]. Slim: "It's even better when you help". Slim: [as she’s leaving the room], "Okay. You know you don't have to act with me, Steve. You don't have to say anything and you don't have to do anything. Not a thing. Oh, maybe just whistle. You know how to whistle, don't you, Steve? You just put your lips together - and blow".
Best Kiss Between Man and Ape: Planet of the Apes (1968). George (Charlton Heston): "Doctor, I’d like to kiss you goodbye". Dr. Kira (Kim Hunter as an ape): "All right, but you’re so darned ugly!"
Best Teen Kisses: Spiderman (2002). It’s in the rain and upside down. Sixteen Candles (1984), Rebel Without a Cause (1955), and Twilight (2008).
Best G-rated Kiss: The Princess Bride (1987). Even children can watch this one! Grandfather (Peter Falk) reading to his grandson about the kiss between Buttercup and Westley: "Since the invention of the kiss, there have been five kisses that were rated the most passionate, the most pure. This one left them all behind. The End"

Best Kisses from women "Black Widow Spiders": Body Heat (1981), The Postman Always Rings Twice (1946), and Double Indemnity (1944).

Most Famous Movie Kiss: From Here to Eternity (1953.) Burt Lancaster (Milton) and Deborah Kerr (Karen) lay on the sand kissing as the churning Hawaiian waves wash over them on a summer night on a deserted sandy beach. Karen: "I never knew it could be like this. Nobody ever kissed me the way you do"!
