Planting Gardens By the Signs
April 08, 2011
Many of our grandparents planted gardens based on the signs of the Zodiac and by the phases of the moon. Each day of the month is dominated by one of the 12 signs of the Zodiac. Each sign appears at least once a month plus two or three days. Each of the signs represents fire, earth, air or water. Calendars used to have the signs on them and the phases of the moon. For example, planting is best done in the fruitful signs of Scorpio, Pisces, Taurus or Cancer. These signs represent water and earth. One of the rules for planting crops which yield produce above the ground is to plant during the increase of the moon. Crops which yield produce below the ground (root crops) should be planted when the moon is decreasing. There are many rules to follow based on the signs and the moon. Cut your hair in Libra, Sagittarius, Aquarius or Pisces, and it will grow stronger and thicker.
Whether you are a believer or a scoffer, it is fun to look at some of the rules our grandparents followed for planting their gardens.
You can find this topic and many other subjects in the Foxfire books found at Mid-Continent Library.
