Peanut Butter...Who Knew?!

November 18, 2010

While looking for things to celebrate in the month of November, beyond Thanksgiving, I discovered that this is the month that we celebrate peanut butter.

Now who doesn’t love a peanut butter sandwich, or my favorite, halved bananas with peanut butter and mayonnaise spread over them? Did you know that peanut butter was created by a doctor in St. Louis as a healthy protein substitute for patients with no teeth? In looking into this, I discovered some very unusual ways that peanut butter is used. Have you ever heard of a peanut butter sandwich with bacon, bologna, tomato, mayonnaise, or dill pickles? It would appear that some people find that anything goes with peanut butter. How about some household uses for peanut butter. I have used peanut butter for luring those awful creatures called mice into my trap, but I have never used it as shaving gel...can’t even imagine it! Peanut butter is also used for leather cleaner and as a lubricator for removing gum from hair or clothes, and even for lubricating things like lawnmower blades. Who knew?!

There are several books in the library system relating to peanut butter. There are books discussing the history, uses, jokes, games, songs, plays, projects, activities, antique peanut butter jars, and, of course, last but not least, and probably my personal favorite, RECIPES!  For your kids, try out the book Peanut Butter Party : Including the History, Uses, and Future of Peanut Butter. This book seems to have it all for kids. For you adults, check out Peanut Butter Planet : Around the World in 80 Recipes, From Starters to Main Dishes to Desserts. Feel free to let me know if you need anyone to critique those recipes you try out!

Just in case you need another reason to celebrate……GO PEANUT BUTTER!
