Opening the Doors to New Worlds
September 25, 2013
The Kearney Branch played host to a special group of librarians from Egypt yesterday. As part of the International Visitor Leadership Program from the U.S. Department of State, these fellow book-lovers from across the globe visited libraries throughout the metro area. Library Director and CEO Steve Potter and Branch Manager Angela Gillette sat down with the representatives for a casual chat about the ways we serve our communities.
The discussion included sharing many of MCPL's goals and methods, but also provided a chance for our staff to learn more about how libraries across the world handle their community needs. The representatives shared that they not only have public libraries, but have additional children's libraries that serve only the younger members of the community. Even though we are a world apart, they also present many of the same types of programs as us, including skill building workshops, computer classes, language courses, and art-based programs.
For Mid-Continent Public Library, it was an honor to share and learn with our counterparts from across the world.
