One-Hit Wonderful
September 28, 2012
Recently, I blogged about literary one-hit wonders, so I thought I would follow that up with music one-hit wonders. While the list is years long and decades wide, there is one song from the 1980s that always comes to my mind, not because it is my favorite but because I still hear it being played in a variety of venues.
The song? Walking on Sunshine by Katrina and the Waves.
While this band is considered a one-hit wonder in the United States, Kimberly Rew, founder of Katrina and Waves, wrote other songs that were covered by various performers. Royalties from airplay and advertising from Walking on Sunshine have been extremely high. You hear it everywhere: on the radio, in the movies, in commercials, and on TV. Not a bad gig, if you can get it.
On another note, these unexpected folks were one-hit wonders. Can you name their hit?
- Bruce Willis
- Eddie Murphy
- Bernadette Peters
- Tracey Ullman
- Mike Douglas (Talk show host)
- Lorne Green
So, here’s to that one song that will now be in your head all day long.
Happy singing! (I’m walking on sunshine, woooah...and don’t it feel good!)
