Not Just for Teens Anymore

January 31, 2012

As you may or may not know, MCPL is currently holding its 6 in 12 adult reading challenge. The rules seem easy enough; read six books in twelve months for a chance to win an eReader.

For an avid reader like me, six books seem like a piece of cake. Still, I know there are book lovers out there who wish they could read more but can’t find the time. For those readers, I offer a solution…Why not try a teen book?

Many of you are probably asking: "What would make a teen book so great for the 6 in 12?"

Well, they usually have fewer pages and shorter hold lists than adult novels. Finding a book you like shouldn’t be a problem, either; romances, fantasy fiction, and sci-fi novels abound (Twilight, Harry Potter, and the Hunger Games series are hugely popular examples). You can even find books by bestselling authors like James Patterson, Kathy Reichs, and John Grisham, all of whom have found success in the teen genre.

If you do decide to try out some teen fiction, check out the Teens Page or check with your local MCPL branch. They might have a teen expert on hand to point you in the right direction. Don’t be afraid to travel into the teen section, you might just find that teen books aren’t just for teens anymore!

Young Adult books hook you

Submitted by Anonymous on February 7, 2012 - 6:32pm.

Young Adult books hook you faster and keep your attention longer, in my opinion. There's a lot of great stuff out there, and I know a lot of "clearly not teens" who love YA. Try John Green for some good realism, or James Dashner. Jonathan Maberry, or Suzanne Collins for some state-of-the-art dystopia. Also, check out YALSA's recommendations:
