Nifty Novelist

April 09, 2012

Novelist Plus is one of MCPL’s many Research Databases. It is a great site for readers. I have used many of the features, and can say with certainty that you will find NoveList Plus useful for many reasons. To take full advantage of NoveList Plus, take the time to set up an account. All you need to do to set up an account is create a username and password. Having an account will bring up previous searches, books, or other items of interest you’ve saved. You will also have the ability to make folders. One of my folders is for cozy mysteries. I have several different cozy series saved here. I like this because it lists all the books in the series and in order. Set up as many folders as you like: books you’ve read and books you want to read. Another folder I set up is for legal thrillers for authors such as John Grisham or Kate Wilhelm. Folders can also be for books you’ve read or want to add to your reading list.

There are many ways to search in the NoveList Plus database. You have the ability to type several key words in the search bar. Going into advanced search will allow you to separate out different series by the same author. For example, if you like Jan Karon’s Mitford books, you can look at the main series or her Christmas titles. The site is very intuitive, and I was able to find the book The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. This is a book set in World War II on an isolated island. The residents formed a book club while under occupation. The title is a tongue twister, and I was able to find the book by using different search words. First, I typed "potato" and "book club," then the book was pulled up. Then I typed, "pie" and "World War II." Once again, it was a successful search for the book I was looking for. If you’re looking for a book or author that has been recommended with sketchy details, this is the way to go. You can also check to see if the book you are interested in is in the Library catalog using the "check the library catalog" link.

NoveList Plus offers an unbelievable selection of genres and sub genres. It not only offers fiction titles, but nonfiction titles are available as well. NoveList Plus also has author read alikes, book discussion guides, and featured articles for book lovers. This is a great resource for really narrowing down the book or books you’re looking for. Another great feature is being able to print and email directly from the webpage.

NoveList Plus is a fun and easy to use database for our customers.
