Natural Halloween Decorations

October 15, 2012

I don’t know about you, but I have to remove spider webs from the front porch at my house on a daily basis. Usually, I don’t get to see the culprits who are decorating so nicely for Halloween, but the past three days, I have seen a beautiful spider out there! Okay, I agree, the words beautiful and spider are usually not supposed to be in the same sentence, but check this out!

I’d like to think that it is keeping the gnats out of my house, so I leave it alone.

Speaking of spiders, for the past 3 years, not counting this one, I had an orb spider on my back deck. I think the drought got to it this year because it did not come out this summer. The reason I noticed it was not only its big size, but the fact that if I took my dog out at say, 2:00 a.m. in the morning, there was a beautiful circular web hanging across the front of my sliding door. (I got used to ducking.) The crazy thing was that when I got up a few hours later, it was gone!!! That was the neatest spider I have ever met!

If you want to know the truth about spiders, go to your local library and look them up in the nonfiction section under 595.44. This yellow striped one is harmless and called a black and yellow Argiope. The neat one was called a Nocturnal Orb Weaver.
