National Tongue Twister Day
March 04, 2013
Apparently, Saturday March 2 was National Tongue Twister Day. After I chuckled over this fact, I began to think about all the books I have read with tongue twisters in them. Of course the first title that came to mind was Dr. Seuss's Fox in Socks, which I have yet to read without making a mistake! It really does make your tongue a little numb (as the book asks you on the last page)! The more I thought about this, I began to recall the various times I have been asked (by teachers mostly) for picture books that focus on one letter. Just two weeks ago, I had a request similar to this by a person who wanted to pick up the material in a couple hours. This can be a frustrating and difficult search - but so rewarding when you locate the right books! Not every letter in the alphabet lends itself to this process, but here is a list of some good picture books that use alliteration effectively:
- Animalia by Graeme Base
- Four Fur Feet by Margaret Wise Brown
- Six Sick Sheep by Joanna Cole
- Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy by Lynly Dodd
- Hairy Maclary and Zachary Quack by Lynly Dodd
- All the Awake Animals are Almost Asleep by Crescent Dragonwagon
- Alison's Zinnia by Anita Lobel
- Clara Caterpillar by Pamela Duncan Edwards
- Dinorella by Pamela Duncan Edwards
- Four Famished Foxes and Fosdyke by Pamela Duncan Edwards
- Some Smug Slug by Pamela Duncan Edwards
- The Worrywarts by Pamela Duncan Edwards
- Watch William Walk by Ann Jonas
- Fox in Socks by Dr. Seuss
