National Pie Day
January 21, 2011
Breakout the pans and fire up the ovens, January 23 is National Pie Day!
It’s hard to believe, but for almost every type of food, there’s a day that’s dedicated to it. Ice Cream even has a whole month dedicated to it. (President Ronald Reagan gave the honor of National Ice Cream month to July.) But, it’s hard to think about ice cream when there’s currently a foot or more of snow on the ground.
So, it’s time to celebrate something that’s as American as… well, apple pie! To me, pie seems to be one of the most versatile desserts there is – from pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving to lemon merengue in June. Pie isn’t even content to stick to just dessert. It can be found as the main course of a meal, such as shepherd’s or pot – or even at breakfast in the form of quiche. And let’s not forget the absolute joy that is pizza.
