National Anti-Boredom Month
July 17, 2012
July is National Anti-Boredom Month. Who knew there was such a thing? Here are a few suggestions if you get bored this month:
Duct tape! Lots of duct tape: colors and stripes, penguins and animal prints. Have lots on hand to make all kinds of things such as roses, wallets, bookmarks, and covers for everything. Check out these titles in our Library catalog: Just Duct Tape It!, Stick It!, and Got Tape?
Learn a new language such as Spanish, German, or Mandarin. Visit the Library's Foreign Language databases and try out Mango Languages or Muzzy Online (that one's great for kids!).
Read a good book. Of course, I would suggest a biography such as I Am Scout (biography of Harper Lee) by Charles J. Shields or Small Steps: The Year I Got Polio by Peg Kehret.
Watch your favorite TV series from start to finish. MCPL has many TV series that can be checked out; a couple of my favorites are Star Trek: The Next Generation and The Andy Griffith Show.
Find someone to bust boredom with and play checkers or--if you know how--chess. If all else fails and you are on your own, a good old fashioned game of solitaire with a real deck of cards will work.
Try some new recipes--think Italian. Here are two cookbooks to try: Two Meatballs in the Italian Kitchen and Complete Italian Cooking.
If the kids are getting restless, I’ll refer you to my first suggestion, or you can find lots of great ideas in these books: This Book Made Me Do It and Backyard Crafts.
But if none of these ideas sound exciting, don't worry; a little boredom from time to time is kind of nice, too.
