Mysterious Thoughts on a Thursday
July 25, 2012
In July, Thursday’s Mystery Book Club discussed Back of Beyond by C. J. Box. The group liked this one. It’s a quick, good mystery read. When Cody’s friend, Hank, is found dead, Cody knows it was no accident. When he realizes the killer is on the same back country Yellowstone adventure as his son, the stakes become greater. Cody can be a stubborn, rash individual, but his heart is in the right place. He must keep his son safe. What endeared Cody, even with all his faults, to many in the group is his story of sneaking off to the library after school to read. Neither family nor friends knew this because it’d have ruined his reputation as a scoundrel.
The group hopes Mr. Box will turn Cody into a series. He is a struggling, flawed character that the group could see going either way, continuing to improve himself or falling off the wagon again and having to bring himself back. They would like to see where he’d end up.
On Aug. 9th, we will be discussing The Mapping of Love & Death by Jacqueline Winspear. Books for the current month’s selection can be picked up at the Blue Ridge Branch.
