Mysterious Thoughts on a Thursday
May 22, 2013
Thursday’s Mystery Book Club discussed The Complaints by Ian Rankin. This book introduces us to Malcolm Fox. He’s a detective working in the complaints, which is the equivalent to internal affairs here in the U.S. He’s given the assignment to investigate Officer Jamie Breck. Just as he starts looking into Breck, Fox gets a phone call…from Breck.
His sister’s boyfriend has been found murdered and Breck is the investigating officer on the case. He wants to know when Fox last saw the abusive boyfriend. This is just the beginning of the twists and turns this book takes. And because of the twists and turns, this one gets a little complex.
One of the members said this felt more like a FBI or CIA type storyline. They feel this is one of those books you need to keep a running list of characters just so you can keep them all straight. It’s an okay read. After the discussion, four of the members decided to give the second book a try, The Impossible Dead. They are hoping its storyline doesn’t get as complex as The Complaints.
On June 13th, we will be discussing As The Crow Flies by Craig Johnson. This is book eight in the Walt Longmire series. Books for the current month’s selection can be picked up at the Blue Ridge Branch.
