Mysterious Thoughts On a Thursday
October 24, 2012
In October, Thursday’s Mystery Book Club discussed Speak of the Devil by Richard Hawke. Fritz Malone is a New York City P.I. who ends up in the middle of a plot to terrorize the city. There are so many characters, you’re never sure who to trust and who’s behind it all. The story does resolve the conspiracy (the main mystery), but leaves a ton of unanswered questions.
Each unanswered question leaves the reader wondering which book answers that question. Funny thing is, this book is the first in the Fritz Malone series, and Cold Day in Hell is the only title after this one. One book club member felt that Fritz is similar to Robert Crais’ Elvis Cole character in attitude. Another member felt this book had a similar set up to Robert B. Parker’s Spenser series, one tough P.I. with his best friend and savvy girlfriend as sidekicks. The group gives this one 4 magnifying glasses out of 5, if you are just looking for a quick read. If you are looking to discuss it, they’d rank it 3 out of 5.
On November 8th, we will be discussing Poisoned Tarts by G. A. McKevett. Books for the current month’s selection can be picked up at the Blue Ridge Branch.
