My Valentine!

February 08, 2013

Ahh...Cupid strikes again, or, oh no, Valentine's Day! If you have a "significant other" in your life, it's time to prepare! The holiday of romance is almost upon us.

Now, just where did all this come from? Well...depends on what you want to believe. The Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine. One, known as Valentinus, was said to be imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers during the Roman Empire because Emperor Claudius II decided young, single men were better soldiers and outlawed marriage for them. Another, ahem, legend has it that Valentine, in prison, fell in love with his jailer's daughter, and before his execution, sent her a letter signed, "from your Valentine." A term we still use today.

Anyway, back to present day. Now, it's all about cards, chocolates, flowers, and romantic evenings. You don't have "significant other"? How about a hot date with a book? Try A Match Made by Cupid by Tracy Madison, Chocolate Covered Murder by Leslie Meier, or Hot Mail by Janice Maynard. Or, you could stay home alone and watch Wow! Wow! Wubbzy! Wubbzy Be Mine on DVD.

Yep, all are available at your local library. Happy Valentine's Day!
