My Trip To Midwest Genealogy Center

September 23, 2011

I dabble in my family’s history, and have been for some time. I wish I had more time for it. It can be most rewarding. I never know what will turn up, or where it might lead.

Visiting the Midwest Genealogy Center, I forced myself to stay focused, just one family at a time. I found a fabulous book with school pictures. The year was 1913. I thumbed through it, finding names I recognized from the back of old pictures my grandmother had, and names my grandmother talked about, and believe it or not I could check the book out. What a treasure I found. Once I got home and started looking through the book with all the pictures in it, I came upon my grandmother when she was 16 years old. All of her 10 siblings, her cousins, and her friends she talked about were in the book. I can now put a face and a name to people I hadn’t known. My sister and I took a trip to Tennessee and met a 2nd cousin we knew about. She and another 2nd cousin took us to the old cabin where grandma was born and grew up in. The place was Indian Mound, Tennessee...what a small place!

It’s exciting to find information about your family. Each little piece of information leads to another and another. I hope that you can take some time to explore your family, too, at the Midwest Genealogy Center.
