My Favorite Book of 2012
December 27, 2012
I am a big series reader, and I'm always looking for something new. Recently, my sister introduced me to Libriomancer by Jim Hines. If you like science fiction and fantasy, then you will like this book. There are so many references to other books, though the story works even if you don't get all the references, which makes it even better.
Isaac is a libriomancer, which means that he uses books to do magic. He can pull items from books to use in this world. He is also a librarian (a man after my own heart!), and he catalogs the magical items for the Porters (a magical group started by Gutenberg). Vampires have started kidnapping and killing other Porters, and when they come after Isaac, he decides he needs to find out what is happening. I love that the vampires all originated from books, so there are "species" of vampires depending on what book they came from. One such species is the sparklers, which has only been around since 2005!! And, how the vampires are dealt with depends on how they were written.
This is a really great story with such a great premise. The characters are fun and well written. And it is the beginning of a series, so I am doubly excited!

If you like hunting references . . .
. . . try Silverlock, by John Myers Myers. It's a fun and brilliantly funny quest through the Commonwealth of Leters, undertaken (quite by accident) by one Clarence Shandon. Try to keep track of every myth/story/play/genre/trope mentioned. An unforgettable romp.
