Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom.
August 21, 2012
This was one of my favorite shows when I was a kid. For 20 minutes, Marlin Perkins would take you to some exotic locale for an adventure. The show was educational, exciting, and entertaining.
Mr. Perkins, Jim Fowler, and Peter Gros brought wildlife to the living rooms of millions long before Animal Planet was even thought of. The show debuted on January 6, 1963 and went into syndication in 1971.
Mr. Perkins began his career right here in Missouri at the Saint Louis Zoo in 1926. Jim Fowler is also known for his many appearances on the Johnny Carson Show. Peter Gros kept the tradition alive of naturalist education by representing the Wild Kingdom on the Animal Planet network.
You can find the vintage shows of the Wild Kingdom on the YouTube channel, or as always, use your Library card to get one of the DVDs below.
It’s really cool to see kids today getting as excited as I did watching the new Wild Kingdom episodes on Animal Planet.
