Moving Day

August 22, 2011

Moving Day! Ah, the dreaded words! Moving…can be Good…can be Exciting. But, it is always EXHAUSTING!

I just did my first move, or at least part of it. Last weekend, we moved my fiancé into our first apartment. Our wedding is next month, so he moved in early in order to get established. We moved in some of my things too, but the rest will wait until after the wedding.

But, there is one stress that I did not have to worry about during the move. Library books! I left all my library books in my room at my parent’s house. Not everyone is so lucky. Library books can easily get lost in the mix of moving, which leaves you with two options:

  1. Take them ALL back before moving day.
  2. Pack them and HOPE you find which boxes they are in before they are overdue.

That’s about all you can do, right? Wrong.

Here at the library, we can suspend your holds. So a couple weeks before the big move, just go to your account and change all your holds to "Suspend." When you do this, you will never lose your place in line. For example, if you are 8th on the list for a book, you will keep moving on down to first. Then, when you decide you want it, just Activate the hold, and you will get the next copy available.

And really, if you have some items you aren’t finished with, I know a trick that helps. Take them back (so they don’t get lost), and just ask the librarians to place a hold on those items for you. Ask them to suspend them until after your move. You can pick how long you want to suspend them, OR just leave it blank and Activate them whenever you want.

This is easy. It really is. Below are the instructions to suspend your holds. But don’t hesitate to just stop by, and your librarian will be glad to show you how.

To Suspend Holds:

  • Go to mymcpl.org
  • Click "Catalog"
  • Log-in using your Library Card number and your ten-digit birthday
  • Click "My Account"
  • Click "Holds"
  • Select the items you want to Suspend
  • Scroll down
  • Click "Suspend Selected"

Love all the options for keeping up with my library books during a move. Thanks!
