Movie Month! Sci-Fi vs. Fantasy: The Battle Ensues

October 11, 2010

So what makes one movie a Sci-Fi and another a Fantasy flick? Does the use of magic make a movie a fantasy? Are movies based on things that could possibly happen in the future Science Fiction? Orson Scott Card, popular author, wrote this analogy, "Ships travel in space / Ships travel in water Laser / Guns as weapons / Swords as weapons." My understanding is that Science Fiction falls under the Fantasy genre, in that Fantasy encompasses anything imagined.

Both a Sci-Fi and Fantasy fan, Tory Deschepper’s favorite movie is Hogfather. She likes it because it is both a science fiction and fantasy film. She says, "It’s based off a book by Terry Pratchett about another world’s version of Christmas." We took a poll at the Oak Grove Branch to find out if you are Sci-Fi or Fantasy fan, and here are the results: Fantasy fans outnumbered the Sci-Fi fans by four points! Many of you don’t like either genre, yet several of you enjoy both.

Here are your favorites Sci-Fi Movies:

Stargate      Star Wars
District 9 Space Balls
Book of Eli Aliens
Serenity Avatar
Star Trek  Matrix
Jurassic Park Prestige
Men From Earth Farenheight 451
Predator

And Favorite Fantasy Flicks:

Constantine
Highlander
Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian
Lord of the Rings
Princess Bride
