Movie Alert! Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters hits theaters August 7th
July 29, 2013
Percy fans unite! The second installment in the Percy Jackson film franchise will be released on August 7th, leaving only one question. Are you ready for the Sea of Monsters?
Now, I know, before you even tell me; believe me, I know. The first movie wasn’t that awesome. Though it did well with the characters (and the box office), it changed the plot of the series and the events of the book. Moreover, it skipped a lot of the Percy charm, the kind of fun style that comes across in chapter titles like “My Mother Teaches Me Bullfighting” and “Three Old Ladies Knit the Socks of Death.” But that’s why this movie will be great. The filmmakers seem to have learned from their mistakes.
A new director takes the helm for this nautical adventure—Thor Freudenthal who formerly directed Diary of a Wimpy Kid, another story with a quirky main narrator. The same actors are back for the demi-god cast, notably Logan Lerman (who was also my personal pick for Percy). Some of the adult actors are being swapped out, however. We see Anthony Head as Chiron the hero-trainer (Buffy flashbacks, anyone?), Stanley Tucci as Mr. D., and Nathan Fillion as the messenger-god Hermes. All of these factors, plus the amazing trailer, make me think that this will be a terrific conclusion to the summer movie season.
If you’re like me, you might want to take this time to review the Percy-canon. Watch the previous movie and rediscover the fun adventure in the original Percy Jackson novels by Rick Riordan. See you at the movies!
