Monday's Musings on a Mystery

February 06, 2012

For January, the Monday Mystery Book Club read Assault with a Deadly Glue Gun (An Anastasia Pollack Crafting Mystery) by Lois Winston. A couple members enjoyed this one, but one member absolutely hated it. The rest of us just did not enjoy this book. The protagonist, Anastasia, is too much of a doormat. Everyone wanted Anastasia to tell the moms to quit hurling insults at each other and just get out. The author also put a lot of details and characters in the story that felt like it should amount to something but never did. For example, why was the 'good looking' Zachary even in the story? A safety deposit box is mentioned several times, but does Anastasia even check to see if there’s one? NOPE. We still think if she checked, she might have found the money in it. Oh yeah, where is the money? Never found out! There’s also a parrot, a dog, and a cat all just waiting to be woven into a funny scene but never do. The animals were hilarious, and we voted the parrot our favorite character. But overall, this book just wasn’t a winner.

On February 13th, we will discuss The Dirty Secrets Club  by Meg Gardiner. This is the first book in the Jo Beckett series, so there’ll be more to follow up with if we like it. Books for the current month’s selection can be picked up at the Blue Ridge Branch.
