Monday's Musings on a Mystery
March 13, 2013
For the March meeting, the Monday Mystery Book Club read Heartbroken by Lisa Unger. The beginning of this book is very dull and slow. It jumps around between Emily, Kate, and Birdie randomly. Not by chapter. Many found themselves reading along and suddenly getting lost because of a character switch within the chapter. It stops the flow for the reader.
Everyone agreed that once all three women get to the island, the pacing of the book picks up and the story starts to move. Unger can write, she ties up the story lines. But, overall, it’s just not an enjoyable read. Birdie is crusty and cold. They wanted Kate to stand up to Birdie and not cater to her. Emily is just so messed up they couldn’t find a reason to like her. Many people don’t have an easy childhood and they don’t resort to crime. This is not a title the group would recommend.
