In Memory of Many, In Honor of All
May 18, 2012
In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15th as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and that calendar week as National Police Week, meaning that National Police Week 2012 is Sunday, May 13th through Saturday, May 19th.
MCPL has many resources suitable for various levels to celebrate, honor, and learn about police officers. For children, you can find both fiction and nonfiction items in the catalog. It is easier if you use the Advanced Search feature, typing in "police" as the subject and using the dropdowns next to Shelf Location to indicate "Juvenile Easy" for which there are 35 entries. By changing the Shelf Location to "Juvenile Nonfiction," you will find 99 entries. In our branch, there are also police-themed book bundles of juvenile easy fiction books.
One book that would be particularly interesting to children is titled Police Dogs by Frances Ruffin. Young readers will meet Sipo and other police dogs in this fast-paced, informative narrative of dogs trained to sniff out criminals.
If you have the chance this week, thank a police officer for his or her service to the community. Children could make Thank You or appreciation cards. It doesn’t take long, but everyone enjoys being appreciated.
Even if you don’t make it in to the Library to check out the police items during this week, we hope you’ll check on them during your next visit. Just be sure to drive carefully and follow all the traffic laws!
