In Memory: Lois Unger, 1982-2011

October 19, 2011

We at the Riverside Branch are grieving the loss of our co-worker and Assistant Manager, Lois Unger. Many of you remember her smile. When I first arrived at Riverside, I was amazed that Lois knew almost every customer that entered. Almost every customer was greeted by name, accompanied by her wonderful smile.

Lois was also well-known among the library staff by her interest in cooking. She and I shared this interest, and whenever a new cookbook was added to our collection, we almost always received a copy of the same cookbook on the same day. She also often shared recipes with Kathryn, but would always let us know the modifications she had made to improve upon the original.

Lois was the most enthusiastic Royals fan that many of us had ever met. One cold rainy day last fall, Lois was determined to attend the game after work. It was ladies night, and women in attendance were to receive a knit hat. Lois looked very cute in that hat; she was very proud of it.

Lois loved children, and nothing made her happier than reading our newest picture books aloud to children (and to her co-workers). Lois really enjoyed being able to scan the new picture books when they were received at the library, so that she could choose her favorites to read to her storytime children. One of her dreams was to write a children’s book of her own one day.

Lois made a special effort to welcome all of the children who visited the library. Many of our younger customers always asked for "Miss Lois" every time they visited the library. Lois longed for a family of her own, and felt blessed with the arrival of her daughter, Melody. We will all miss our Lois. To read more about Lois, please click here.

I was fortunate enough to work with Lois at the Liberty Branch, as well asaAttend Shoal Creek Community Church with her. She always had time to share the latest picture books with me that she thought my preschoolers would love. She always had a smile for everyone and we will miss her terribly.
