This Memorial Day, Walk in a Soldier’s Boots
May 24, 2012
Memorial Day is a holiday filled with reflection, flags, and flowers. It honors our fallen heroes: women and men who gave lives for the freedom we hold dear.
This Memorial Day, consider walking in the boots of those who know the sacrifices of a soldier. Consider these books and others.
First, take a look at American Veterans on War: Personal Stories from World War II to Afghanistan by Elise Tripp. This book relates stories of 55 American veterans, aged 20 to 90, who fought in World War II, Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf War, Iraq, and Afghanistan. It was recorded in 2009 and 2010, and it's presented in their own words.
Next, consider Forever a Soldier: Unforgettable Stories of Wartime Service by Tom Wiener. Forever a Soldier presents an outstanding collection of 37 stories from the Library of Congress Veterans History Project.
Others to consider are Voices of World War I: Stories from the Trenches and Voices of World War II: Stories from the Front Lines.
These first hand accounts provide us with an unique opportunity to learn why it is important that we do not forget the enormous selflessness of those we honor on Memorial Day.
