Melting Away the Cold
January 11, 2013
For those of you looking for something to warm yourself in this cold weather, and for something fun and unique to do with friends or family, consider a long lingering meal at The Melting Pot. For those of you who have never been there, The Melting Pot is a restaurant located at 450 Ward Parkway, Kansas City, MO. They specialize in one type of food – fondue!
From the menu, you can choose from a variety of cheese fondues, side salads, main entrée, and the pièce de résistance, chocolate fondues! Each fondue comes in a large pot and is meant to be shared by all members of the dining party. Kids especially enjoy the tiny fondue forks used to dip the variety of foods offered into the fondue pot.
Dining out can be expensive though, and the weather does not always cooperate. Fondue can also be enjoyed at home. Fondue pots can often be found in many stores this time of year, as they make good Christmas presents. After Christmas, of course, you will be able to find them on sale; so now is the time to buy one!
Have you ever cooked fondue? Or, are you tired of the same old fondue recipes? Let the Library help you out with some great fondue recipe books to get you started or to spice up your cooking pot. To help get you started, check out Great Party Fondues by Peggy Fallon, which has advice for beginners on everything from preparing and serving great-tasting fondue to fondue pots, ingredients, safety, and even etiquette. Or, check out Not Your Mother’s Fondue by Hallie Harron to find some modern and unique recipes.
Whether you choose to fondue at a restaurant or at home, enjoy the experience and share it with others. Just be careful not to lose your food in the pot. Tradition says that the first man to lose his food in the pot must provide the host with a bottle of wine. The woman who loses her food must kiss every man at the table! Of course, that is just tradition; you can make up your own rules if you host a fondue party!
