MCPL No Longer Purchasing eBooks from HarperCollins
March 23, 2011
At this time Mid-Continent Public Library has decided to stop purchasing HarperCollins eBooks due to their new eBook lending model. This will not affect the purchasing of other formats of HarperCollins materials, such as print and audiobooks. MCPL will continue to purchase eBooks from all other publishers available through Overdrive.
Under the new eBook lending model, HarperCollins eBooks have circulation limits. Each new HarperCollins eBook title would have a maximum of twenty-six checkouts. Those checkouts would be available consecutively, that is, to one patron at a time (one copy/one user) for the specified lending period.
Once the twenty-six checkouts were exhausted, the title would no longer be available for checkout unless additional copies were licensed. Unfortunately, these titles would still show as being in the collection, but customers would not be able to check out those titles.
Also, as of now, no additional copies will be purchased for a title acquired before the new lending model went into effect, even if there are more than 10 holds (as is usual MCPL policy).
Customers may send their concerns to HarperCollins at this email address: Library.eBook@HARPERCOLLINS.com
