The Independence Examiner reported that the 2010 International Peace Award has been announced by the Community of Christ Church. Author, co-founder, and executive director of the nonprofit, Central Asia Institute and Pennies for Peace, Greg Mortenson will receive this year's honor. In 1996 Mortenson was kidnapped by the Taliban, in both 2008 and 2009, he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. His life work has been to promote education and literacy programs for children, especially girls in Pakistan and Afghanistan. He has supported 131 schools, and helped to educate 58,000 children, including 44,000 girls. Three Cups of Tea (which has sold over 3.5 million copies) and Stones into Schools continue to be popular requests, and are listed on the suggested reads by our staff. The award will be presented October 29 at the Community of Christ Temple, 201 South River Blvd. Greg Mortenson will speak about his experiences. If you enjoy meeting authors, this is one to remember.
