March Madness is Upon Us!
March 28, 2013
I love March Madness. I grew up in the Kansas City, MO area, where there was the great border war between the University of Kansas and University of Missouri, or the interstate rivalry between University of Kansas and Kansas State University. My family loved college basketball, so I fell in love with it myself.
My favorite time of year is March because of the NCAA basketball tournament. We have our regular contenders such as North Carolina, Duke, and KU. This year Kentucky was left out of the mix, but usually that team is a top contender in whatever region it plays. I love the Cinderella schools that beat the higher seeds. I love to see how far they can get into the tournament. In 2010, Butler was a 5 seed that went all the way to the championship game but finally lost to Duke.
I am a Big 12 fan. Even with its various comings and goings, I will always be a Big 12 fan. This year they added Texas Christian University and West Virginia University. Over the last few years, we have lost the University of Nebraska, University of Colorado, University of Missouri, and Texas A & M. The biggest loss to the conference, I feel, is the University of Missouri because of its rivalries with KU and Illinois. I really enjoyed watching these teams play each other. They always bring their best game play when they met.
If you are interested in the history of the Big 12 or NCAA tournament, MCPL has books on both subjects. I would recommend The Big Dance: the Story of the NCAA Basketball Tournament by Barry Wilner and Basketball in the Big 12 Conference by Michael Sommers. Grab your brackets and see who will be the 2013 champion!
