Lovin' the Chucks!
December 13, 2010
Do you ever get up in the morning and find yourself wondering what on earth you are going to wear? This is a daily problem for me. And today, it was compounded by the fact that almost all my clothes are dirty, and there’s snow on the ground. So, I ended up wearing a summer dress (weird), a sweater (warm), and a pair of blue and lime green velour Chucks (fabulous) rather than regular dress shoes.
I absolutely adore wearing Chucks (in case you don’t know the lingo, I’m talking about Chuck Taylor Converse All-Stars, also referred to as Converse) and have since I was in sixth grade and got my first pair of black high tops. What’s not to love? They’re comfortable, they come in great colors, and they go with anything. Okay, well, I think they go with anything. I’ll wear them with jeans, skirts, tutus, shorts, bathing suits, pajamas, dress pants, Halloween costumes, tuxedos (actually, I’ve never worn a tux, but my prom date wore one and also wore Chucks; I thought it was cool), formal dresses, and anything else.
I currently own only four pairs of Chucks (sadness)—pink, yellow, gray, and the afore-mentioned blue and lime green—but I’m crossing my fingers for Christmas presents that come in long, skinny boxes. If you or someone you know would also love such an amazing gift (and honestly, who wouldn’t???), you can buy them online (you can even design your own!) or go out to Legends and buy them from the Converse store.
Some cool facts about Converse:
-
The original factory opened in 1908.
-
Chucks didn’t officially come into existence until 1921 when Chuck Taylor, a basketball player, first showed up complaining of sore feet and was given a job promoting a new line of athletic shoes that bore his name.
-
Chucks were only available in black until 1966 when the company started offering different colors.
-
Rising popularity of Chucks in the 1990’s was credited to the fame of Nirvana’s lead singer, Kurt Cobain, who wore his Chucks almost constantly.
