For the Love of Baseball
July 21, 2010
Two retired guys I know are about to begin what I have dubbed, “Jim and Bob’s Mini Baseball Adventure”. They begin the three day stint with an afternoon game at “The K” with the Boys in Blue vs Toronto. If they survive the heat and humidity, they’ll take in the evening game of the KC T-Bones vs the Schaumburg Flyers (Illinois).
A short trek up I-35 to Des Moines on Thursday will get them to the final three-game series bout between the Iowa Cubs and the Oklahoma City Redhawks. If they are lucky enough to be one of the first 1,500 fans through the turnstiles, they will each get a Casey Blake Bobblehead. Significance? Casey Blake and these two retired guys graduated from the same high school…cool!
The grand finale of this mini baseball adventure will be at Omaha’s Rosenblatt Stadium; fifty year home of the NCAA (Division I) College World Series that ended June 29th when South Carolina stole the National Championship crown from UCLA in the best two out of three. Omaha Royals move to Sarpy County Ballpark next spring. So, for one last time, from Rosenblatt’s boxed seats, Jim and Bob hope to see Mike Moustakas, KC’s first round draft pick in 2007, in action as they take in Omaha Royals vs the New Orleans Zephyrs on Friday night. Post-game fireworks and concert by .38 Special will seal the deal on this memorable baseball road trip.
