Lock-Ins at the Library

June 04, 2012

Looking for something EXTRA fun to do this summer? Wish you could get out of the heat and into a place where you can hang with friends away from parents and younger siblings? Just want some free food? Well, look no further; Mid-Continent Public Library has exactly what you need!

This year’s Teen Summer Reading Program theme is Own the Night, and we figured the best way to celebrate that would be to let teens into the Library AFTER THE LIGHTS ARE OUT! That’s right; five different branches are hosting 10 teen lock-ins after the Library is closed to all other customers.

Two have already taken place: the Zombie Apocalypse Survival Camp at Lee’s Summit (where teens were identified as zombies or survivors and found themselves either chasing after the brains or struggling to stay human!) and a Glow in the Dark party at Blue Ridge. If you were one of the lucky attendees, you already know what a blast these lock-ins are. If you missed the first ones, don’t worry—there are 8 more to come!

Friday, June 8th, 6:30 - 9:30 p.m.
Boardwalk Branch – Teen Game Night
Think board games are boring? Think again! Join us in playing over 200 different games, including Killer Bunnies, Ninja Burger, Pictureka, Nuts, Poo, and tons more. Food and prizes provided.

Friday, June 15th, 6:30 - 9:30 p.m.
Smithville Branch – Wands, Arrows, and Teeth
It’s the ultimate showdown among Harry Potter, Twilight, and The Hunger Games. Expect trivia, games, crafts, challenges, food and prizes! This party costs $5 for entry.

Friday, June 22nd, 6:30 - 9:30 p.m.
Buckner Branch – Murder Mystery: Book Fair of Death!
Best-selling author Emily Thornton has been found dead at the Library! Join Detective Bibliophile in the investigation to solve the crime and arrest the murderer. Who’s the guilty party? It could be you!

Friday, June 29th, 6:30 - 9:30 p.m.
Blue Ridge Branch – Zombies and Brain Freeze
What could be better than zombies hunting for brains? Zombies with brain freeze, of course! At this party, zombies and ice cream will mingle all night.

Friday, July 13th, 6:30-9:30 p.m.
Boardwalk Branch – The Amazing Race
You’ve seen the show, now be one of the competitors. Solve the clues, complete the challenges, watch out for road blocks, and don’t be the last team to the pit stop, or you might be eliminated from the race! The winners won’t go home with a million dollars, but food and prizes definitely await you.

Friday, July 20th, 6:30-9:30 p.m.
Smithville Branch – Wands, Arrows, and Teeth
Lines have been drawn, gauntlets have been thrown, and on this night the champion will be crowned. Find out which series earns the title of BEST EVER; will it be Harry Potter, Twilight, or The Hunger Games? Only you can decide. This party costs $5 for entry.

Friday, July 20th, 6:30-9:30 p.m.
Buckner Branch – Creature Double Feature
Grab some popcorn, find the best seat in the house, and settle in for two of Tim Burton’s best movies—The Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride.

Saturday, August 4th, 5:30-8:30 p.m.
Lee’s Summit Branch - Maximum Ride Almost-Release Party
Trivia, snacks, and a general celebration of all things Maximum Ride awaits you here. Get together with fellow fans to prepare for the release of the final book in the series.

In order to attend any of these after hours lock-ins, you MUST have a signed permission slip. Pick up slips at any of the participating branches. Can’t wait to see you at the Library this summer AFTER THE LIGHTS ARE OUT!
