Local Library Eggs Deemed Safe to Eat

September 30, 2010

We don’t have to worry about the eggs we eat at our homes, they came from the local library! A couple years ago, MCPL’s Edgerton Branch incubated chicken eggs with the children at storytime. After everyone enjoyed the experience of hatching baby chicks, our family checked out books to learn how to build them a coop. Today, the hens live happily ever after with the librarian and her zoo of a family. You can raise chickens too! Don’t count yourself out just because you live in the city either. Many cities allow a limited amount of backyard poultry. Check with your local officials to find out the laws in your area, then swing by the library to find out everything you need to know about raising your own chickens. You can get many ideas for building attractive chicken coops from the library’s magazine subscription of Backyard Poultry. Build your coop now to be ready for spring chicks.

hooray for chickens!

Raising backyard chickens has been one of the best decisions my family has made! I used to think that only farmers had chickens, but now I can't think of a single down-side to raising our very own backyard flock...besides wanting more chickens!

I live inside Kansas City limits, and we are allowed to raise up to 15 hens. We did a little bit of research on how to build a coop and take care of them, then went to our local farm supply store and bought our 11 adorable baby chicks. By the end of the summer we started getting 8-10 eggs everyday. Our chickens are very healthy happy animals, and with suprisingly little work.

Raising our own chickens has been a fun learning experience for us, and we wish more families would enjoy all the benefits we do. From cuddling fuzzy little cuties, to watching them run and play and graze outside, to sitting down to a plate of fresh, nutrient-rich, truly all-natural eggs, it's a win-win for everyone!

City Chickens

What a great idea! Ecspecially with the problems with eggs in todays market. I have a friend that has 12 hens inside Kansas City limits, in a neighborhood!
