The Library on Your Smartphone? Absolutely!
July 18, 2012
I just returned from a loooong road trip (26 hours from KC to Maine). I had checked out a couple of audiobooks on CD that I thought my twelve year-old son would enjoy to help pass the time. The two books were part of a series (the Storm Runner Series by Roland Smith), and they hooked him right away. At the end of book two, we were left hanging and found out that there was third book to finish out the story. As any parent knows, waiting until we got home to KC to visit the Library was a lifetime away (at least to my son). Enter technology!
I pulled out my iPhone on the return trip and tapped on the OverDrive app. For those of you that don’t know, OverDrive is the software provider that MCPL uses to access eBook and audiobook downloads. Lucky me! The third title was available, and I could download it right to my phone! We pulled over at the next rest stop and right there, in New York State, I was able to download the book via Wi-Fi on my phone in less than 5 minutes. Amazing!
One happy, young guy enjoyed listening to the final book of the series for the next four hours. Yay for technology AND the Library!
