Kearney Page Paul Pursell Rocks as Vocalist of Kaiju
January 19, 2012
Paul Pursell is a pretty quiet guy when he pages here at the Kearney Branch, but he shatters that mild-mannered library persona when he hits the stage as vocalist for the Kansas City-based tech metal band, Kaiju.
The band gets its name from the Japanese word for "giant monster," an homage to the members' love of Japanese monster flicks featuring the likes of Godzilla and Gamera.
"Kaiju is also a Christian band," said Paul, who joined the band in 2009, "which to us basically means that we try to give glory where glory is due, and to be a positive presence in a music scene that can sometimes be heavily associated with hate, nihlism, and negativity."
For those not familiar with tech metal, it's a subgenre of heavy metal which features complex time signatures and very high-speed playing. You can sample one of Kaiju's instrumental tracks on the band's Facebook page.
Next month, Paul and his bandmates plan to start recording their first full-length album at Covenant Studios in Kansas City, Mo. with producer Josh Barber.
Rock on Paul and Kaiju!
