Join Us for the Colbern Road Evening Book Club

June 20, 2012

This month, the Colbern Road Evening Book Club is discussing The Tiger’s Wife by Tea Obreht. Join us Wednesday, June 27th at 7:00 p.m. as we gather to talk about the work of one of America’s best fiction writers.

Obreht’s novel is a juxtaposition of Natalia’s story and the secret stories of her grandfather. In a Balkan country recovering from years of war, Natalia, a doctor, sets out on a charitable mission with her friend, Zora. While they work in a small seaside village, Natalia begins to feel secrets rise up around her. Who are the strangers digging in the vineyard? Why does the countryside itself feel uneasy? And why did her grandfather tell her grandmother that he was going to visit Natalia and then travel to a nearby abandoned town to die?

Grief-struck and confused about her grandfather’s death, Natalia turns to the stories he told her as a child. Hoping that her grandfather’s connection with the deathless man and the tiger’s wife will give her some glimpse into his final days, Natalia thinks back to their importance in his life and learns a little about her own.
