It's Almost Hobbit Time!
November 20, 2012
As the precursor to the vastly popular Lord of the Rings film series, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey looks promising. Also known as the first of the trilogy of movies based on J.R.R. Tolkien's classic novel The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, it will be directed by Peter Jackson. We here at the branch have a bit of Hobbit fever, I'm not going to lie. There may even be some fangirling over Benedict Cumberbatch (you may know him from the BBC mini-series Sherlock) as Smaug and The Necromancer, and Richard Armitage as Thorin Oakenshield. Google them without their LOTR makeup, you'll thank me.
You may be looking forward to cameos by Galadriel (played by Cate Blanchett) and Frodo (Elijah Wood). Ian McKellan will also reprise his role as Gandalf. While there is much anticipation for this series, many hardcore fans are concerned about authenticity and adherence to the original story line. Tolkien's story chronicled Bilbo's journey into the mountains with a band of dwarves and Gandalf to thwart the dragon Smaug, and reclaim his treasure. Only time will tell, and we'll find out December 14th.
Before we hit the midnight showing, we're throwing a Party Like a Hobbit shindig at South Independence on December 9th at 2:00 p.m. We hope you can join us for trivia, snacks, and an all-around good time. All ages are welcome, and costumes are encouraged.
