"It Ain't Easy Being Green"

December 30, 2011

Kermit the frog soulfully sings about the trials of being green in his song, It Ain’t Easy Being Green. Undaunted by the challenges of being green, MCPL is moving forward and rolling out a new program to make our branches green friendly and achieve a higher standard of health and safety for our indoor environments.

Some of our green goals pertaining to our branches are to reduce pollution, conserve resources, conserve energy, and reduce consumption and waste. It begins with how we clean and sanitize our branches.

The new products our custodial staff uses to clean our buildings call for fewer chemicals, less water, and less product. Even the vacuums are changing in ease of use, greater coverage, and better capability of removing fine dust from our facilities.

In 2010, Deborah Jordahl was instrumental in researching how MCPL can be greener and more environmentally friendly. As of 2010, she is involved in a green pilot program at the Blue Springs North Branch. Deborah says that the new Touch Point Cleaning Method and the use of the PortionPac System for green cleaning will "reduce the amount of hazardous products kept in the branches and at our distribution center. It will require less space for storage of products, with less plastic throw-away."

Deborah believes these new methods will help MCPL obtain a higher standard of cleanliness and bring us closer to meeting LEEDS certification of green cleaning standards. Green cleaning with green products is just one way MCPL provides exceptional customer service to you, our valued patrons.

We can all breath easier now. Green products save money, too, right?
