Interesting Things About Postage Stamps
February 23, 2011
One of the new postage stamps which are coming this year from the postal service is the Purple Heart with Ribbon stamp. It goes on sale on May 2nd to honor the sacrifices of the men and women who served in the U. S. Military. This interests me because my father, who will be 91 years old this year, was awarded the Purple Heart Medal during World War II for being seriously wounded in action in January of 1945. According to an organization for combat-wounded veterans, the medal is "the oldest military decoration in the world in present use, and the first award made available to a common soldier."
Numerous older postage stamps and their value may be found in the Scott Standard Postage Stamp Catalogue. Volumes of this book contain unlimited resources and information about stamp collectors and dealers, including their recreational, educational, and commercial hobby needs. Anyone who enjoys stamp collecting as a hobby or a business would find these books very beneficial. They may be checked out with your valid MCPL Library Card.
