I'm Getting Psyched for Mad Men, Season Six!
March 26, 2013
My husband and I were a little late getting on the Mad Men bandwagon. I’d heard all of the buzz, but we missed viewing the early episodes. And, it was a little difficult getting interested in the characters when we missed their backstory. After listening to one of my co-workers rave about Mad Men, I decided to give season one a try.
We were hooked! I grew up in the 1960s, but I guess I didn’t remember the mid-century modern décor, the Mary Quant mod miniskirts, the bouffant hairdos, skinny ties and sexist attitudes, and the non-stop smoking. Did people really serve rumaki and Waldorf salad at dinner parties? Even worse, did people really smoke while holding an infant?
We were able to get seasons one through four fairly quickly. We would watch two or three episodes a night until we watched all of them. Then, horror of horrors, season five had a tremendous waiting list! We luckily avoided a tragedy when season five arrived just two weeks before the new season begins on April 7. I think we watched the entire season in three evenings.
Well, for those of you Mad Men followers out there, I’ve come across a couple of items in our catalog I’d like to share. If you’d like to add a little mid-century modern furniture to your household, give Hand Made Modern, by Todd Oldham, a try. For a sixties-era dinner party that Betty Draper would be proud to host, try The Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad Sixties Cookbook by Rick Rogers.
I may have to make some Chicken a la King, lime gelatin dessert, and a Manhattan to celebrate the season premiere!
