If I Were a Book
September 04, 2010
If I were a book, what book would I be? I would definitely be Gone with the Wind written by Margaret Mitchell. It was the very first book I ever read that I literally could not put down. Gone with the Wind is a sweeping saga that takes place during the Civil War and beyond. It has something for everyone including, war, violence, love, and betrayal. Most of us are probably familiar with the movie starring Vivian Leigh and Clark Gable, which is a wonderful adaptation of the book. Margaret Mitchell was a reporter for the Atlanta Journal. While recovering from an injury, she began to write Gone with the Wind, which was the only book she ever wrote and published. Margaret Mitchell won the Pulitzer Prize for this work in 1937, and the movie debuted in 1939 winning 10 Academy Awards. Ten years later in 1949, she was struck by a car while crossing the street and later died. There has always been some sort of controversy surrounding the book, such as Margaret Mitchell's depiction of the antebellum south. However, for me, it was just a terrific read.
