Hyacinths

February 22, 2011

"If of thy mortal goods thou art bereft, and from thy slender store two loaves alone to thee are left, Sell one, and with the dole Buy hyacinths to feed thy soul" ~ Moslih Eddin Saadi (1184 – 1283/1291?)

This past weekend was a teaser for Spring with temperatures in the 70's. As I did my grocery shopping, hyacinths were on sale in the flower department. I'd forgotten what a treat they are in color, form, and smell.

Now is the time to plan your garden. For inspiration and help, here are a few books to get you started:

  • Annuals published by Creative Homeowner Press
  • The Ever Blooming Flower garden: a Blueprint for Continuous Color by Lee Schneller
  • Flower Gardening: Bring Home the Secrets of Great Gardens  by Jessica Brinkert
  • Flower Gardening:  a Practical Guide to Creating Colorful Gardens in Every Yard by Julie Bawden-Davis

We have many more to choose from. Come in and look in section 635, or we will be glad to help you find what you want.

The first day of spring is March 20th, so even if you can't get out yet and start digging, it's great to kick back with your favorite drink and just look at the pictures.
