Hungry for More?
August 27, 2010
So, have you heard of this little book called The Hunger Games?
Of course you have! Who hasn’t?
Well… I hate to admit, because I know it makes me a bad librarian… but I was one of the holdouts. One of the very last people to hear about The Hunger Games and read it.
People kept telling me I needed to. Conversation after conversation ended with “You have to read The Hunger Games! You’ll love it!” And finally, one day while shopping with my mom, I bought it.
And read it within two days.
Everyone was right: I did love it. It was great! It was amazing! It was unlike anything I had ever read before. So, I put a hold on the second book in the series, Catching Fire, using the library’s handy-dandy online catalog. It turns out, I was number 470-something.
Now, the catalog is great, and placing holds on library materials is a way of life in my house. But sometimes a guy just needs a book and he needs it now. So, what choice did I have but to go buy Catching Fire, too? And it just so happened that the next day was my day off… so I read it within 24 hours.
It’s been a long time since I’ve read a series with such ferocity. These books are compelling, original, and heart-pounding. I literally could not put them down.
And now, as you know, the final book in the trilogy (Mockingjay) is out. Of course, I bought that one, as well. I haven’t started it yet, even though it’s tearing me apart to leave it sitting unopened. I know I’ll love it, and I can’t wait to read it. But I also know it will be the end of the series, and I want to treasure it.
But you know as well as I do that when I do start it, I’ll have it finished by the end of the day.
‘Cause these books are just that good.
