How Old is Your Oldest Christmas Ornament?

December 18, 2012

Since right after Thanksgiving, and as Christmas draws nearer, I’ve noticed a considerable number of books being checked out and checked in on designing Christmas ornaments. Some of the ornaments are elaborate, some have a simple elegance, and still some are just very traditional with a nostalgic feel. Somehow, as I began decorating my Christmas tree, I thought of those books and began taking a closer look at my own ornaments.

I think I have ornaments that fit into all of the above categories, but what I began to really notice is that some of these ornaments are very old! Furthermore, the ones that were the oldest were the ones that my children or other family or friends had designed for me. I started counting the years on some of them and figured out that my oldest one is almost 30 years old and still in good shape! It’s a candy cane made of fabric that a friend gave to me when my oldest son was very small. Which leads me to this question, how old is your oldest Christmas ornament? And where did it come from?
