Hooked On Game Apps...
January 09, 2012
I have always enjoyed playing words and board games. I’ve never really been coordinated enough to play arcade-type games or anything that requires quick reflexes or the use of multiple toggle-thingies. If you can relate, here are some game Apps that you might enjoy. I play these on an iPod Touch.
App Name/What I like About It
Words With Friends
This is essentially Scrabble, but it’s at your own pace and you can play multiple games at the same time. In fact, I am currently playing 5 games; most of them are against my sister. Most of them I am losing...

Hanging With Friends
This is a modern-day version of Hangman. Your character is suspended by 5 balloons over hot lava. Your opponent comes up with a word and you are given one vowel and must guess the remaining letters. Fail to guess the word and you lose a balloon. Lose all your balloons and into the lava your character goes.
Fruit Ninja
This can be played as either single player or against an opponent. It’s really just silly fun. You use your finger to swipe across different fruit and get points for how many you slice. There are several different modes in the paid version of this App. Yes, I actually upgraded to the paid version. The sound effects of the fruit being sliced are very realistic.
Angry Birds remains the top-selling App. There are a few different editions of this game, including Rio and Seasons. It is enjoyed by young kids and older adults alike. I cannot seem to get past level 10, but it’s still fun to try. When I’m sitting in a waiting room, I often play Sudoku, rather than look through magazines. My 13 year old daughter chuckles like a maniac at Office Jerk, which allows you to throw things (my favorite is the squid) at an obnoxious, computerized co-worker. Anyone who enjoys a good puzzle may like Unblock Me. My 16 year old daughter got me hooked on that one.
You can find some great materials at the library about Apps. They can be found in the area of 004.1675. If you’d like to make your own Apps, you can learn how by scooting over to section 005.26! Not sure how to find these? There’s probably an App for that, too...but you can ALWAYS ask one of the friendly, knowledgeable
librarians, too!
